SOPW JOIN OTHER SIKH ORGANISATIONS TO ATTEND MEETING WITH UK CABINET SECRETARY

Today, an SOPW member attended a meeting along with other prominent Sikh organisations, with the Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood and various other Government officials at Whitehall in London. The purpose of the meeting was for the Government to meet with Sikh leaders and understand the deep concerns and sentiments that have risen since the release of letters between the UK and Indian Governments in relation to the 1984 attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

We were informed that 200 files have been searched and 25,000 documents have been studied in the process of gathering more information. As well as this, ministers and officials who were around at the time, have been interviewed to get their recollections on the events that took place thirty years ago. Sir Jeremy Heywood stressed that their enquiry is only concerned with the UK's involvement in the attack on the Darbar Sahib and not with the details of what took place or the events that occurred in the aftermath of the attack.

All those present at the meeting were able to put their views to the Government officials and a variety of questions were asked. What was very clear was the emotions and deep level of hurt and betrayal that British Sikhs feel on the uncovering of this issue. A full report on the meeting will be released soon.
