SUMEDH SAINI, WITH THE BLOOD OF INNOCENT SIKHS ON HIS HANDS, SPEAKS FOR THE STATE GOVERNMENT: “THERE CAN BE NO EARLY RELEASE FOR SIKH PRISONERS”

In a press conference held on 7th January, Punjab Director General of Police Sumedh Saini stressed that a ‘life sentence, means life’ and there was no way to release any convict who is undergoing a life term following a Supreme Court order. He also denied there was any such convict in Punjab’s jails, who can be released as of now. Saini said he was putting the record straight at the insistence of the state government. He added, “the states do have policies for premature release of life convicts after they complete minimum sentence, but these policies differ from state to state and no one has a legal right to claim remission”.

Today on 6th January 2015, the Sikh Relief team held high level talks with the Chief Minister of Punjab, Parkash Badal. Sikh Relief/SOPW’s ultimate mission has always been the freedom of Sikh political prisoners and our team of volunteers around the world, work tirelessly to achieve this goal. In the same manner, the India team led by our Senior representative, R P Singh, took the initiative to hold direct governmental talks to discuss what the Punjab administration CAN do rather than sit back and accept what they CANNOT do.

BREAKING NEWS - INDIAN MEDIA REPORTING THE ARREST OF JAGTAR SINGH 'TARA' FROM THAILAND

This morning, the Indian newspapers are reporting the arrest of Jagtar Singh Tara who was convicted in the assassination case of former Punjab chief minister Beant. Jagtar Singh was allegedly arrested on Monday 5th January, from Thailand. Jagtar Singh had been on the run since 2004 when he along with Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh Bheora and Dev Singh, had made a sensational escape from the high-security Burail Model Jail in Chandigarh after digging a tunnel. While Hawara and Bheora were later caught, Jagtar Singh Tara along with Dev Singh remained at large.

ON THIS DAY IN 1989 SHAHEED SATWANT SINGH & KEHAR SINGH WERE SENT TO DEATH

On this day 6th January in 1989, in the early morning at four o'clock, twenty seven year old Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh (uncle of Shaheed Beant Singh) were led to the hangman’s noose. Their voices could be heard from outside the jail, shouting, "Bole So Nihal ! Sat Sri Akaal!", as they both stepped forward and kissed the hangman’s noose.

On the morning of 4th January 2015, a very special Gurpurb programme was held within the confines of Tihar Jail in New Delhi, to commemorate the birth of Guru Gobind Singh. The Tihar complex is made up of a number of jails, each containing over 3,000 inmates. Among the Sikh political prisoners lodged in Tihar are Jagtar Singh Hawara, Parmjit Singh Bheora and Daya Singh Lahoria.
